Aptron Announces mvQuery 8.1

Aptron is pleased to announce mvQuery 8.1, our second release of mvQuery since acquiring it from PrismHR in August 2022.  mvQuery is an easy-to-use query, report designer, and data export tool made for MultiValue databases. It has been a workhorse reporting tool for Aptron Collegix, Ellucian Colleague and other MultiValue database users for over 20 years. Distributed world-wide through a network of independent software vendors, it is deployed in education, finance, manufacturing, distribution, non-profits, human resources, health services and other industries throughout the world.

According to Dianne Ackerman, Aptron Vice President, “Our first release, mvQuery 8.0, rebranded mvQuery for Aptron and re-established support for Rocket D3 in addition to UniVerse and Unidata database servers. With mvQuery 8.1, we have moved forward with our commitment to continually enhance mvQuery for the benefit of both the Collegix and MultiValue database communities. We listened to mvQuery users and made changes to meet their needs.”

Important new mvQuery 8 features.

GUI Administration. A new GUI subsystem has been added to mvQuery. This allows you to set
up users and profiles using graphical instead of text screens.

Administration Enhancements. mvQuery administration has been enhanced to allow multiple profiles for each user, to provide for user deletions and the new security flags listed below. The enhancements also fix casing issues with users.

New Security Flags Added. Two new security flags have been added to the server configuration – RequireUser and RequireProfile. If RequireUser is set to Yes, the system will prevent connections from users who do not have a user entry defined in the security profiles. If RequireProfile is set to Yes, the system will prevent connections from users who may have an entry defined but have no profile. Note that if this is not set, and the user has no profile attached, the user will default to the PUBLIC profile as in previous releases.

Exclude Row Count in Exports. An option has been added to exclude row count when doing a file export.

Password Manager. The Password Manager has been re-instated for mvQuery Standard (SE) and Print Server (PSE) editions.

New Reporting Look. The default reporting stylesheet has been updated to a fresher, more modern look. Sites can of course supply their own stylesheet for their preferred look and feel. This provides nicer fonts than used in the past.

QR Code Support. mvQuery reports now support a range of QR codes and similar 2D barcodes. These are available as data bound fields or as fixed content such as encoding URLs for company websites. Small presentational improvements have been made to the report designer to ensure that the older controls are consistent with the new additions.

Improved Export Functionality. The Export to File and Export to Excel have been upgraded with new functionality. Two new exports have been added to the Export menu on the query, and the existing ones will now set the defaults for these. You can now normalize based on an association, elect to strip the column headers, break rows and row counter, set new column and value delimiters and there is more control internally over quoting delimited data. Please see the user guide for more details.

Other changes

Installation Architecture. Names of the programs, libraries and server assets have now lost
the query7 prefix and are stored in %PROGRAMDATA%\mvQuery.

Refresh Field List and quick dictionary launch. A new tool bar has been added above the list of fields in the query window. This enables you to refresh the field list and adds a convenient quick launch to the dictionary editor.

Quick Re-connect. A new button has been added to the Data Sources toolbar to allow a quick re-connect. This will close the existing connection and reconnect to the same server with the current credential, and without closing any open queries. This is to enable anything that has been cached by the database, for example subroutines in memory, to be flushed without having to close and restart mvQuery. Note that this does not a􏰀ect the current auto-reconnect that takes place if a connection is broken.

New License Screen. A new license screen has been added under the Help menu for Standard Edition. This will show the license details for the currently connected server. If the license code is soon to expire, a warning message will be displayed when you connect, unless running from a script.

Multi-prompt error fix. When a preselect contained multiple prompts, it could result in an error when filled in from the Standard Edition client. This has been fixed.

Qucmd Default ID. To ensure compatibility with all MultiValue query languages, the qucmd now adds a missing default ID field to the start of the display list, not to the end.

Formula Evaluation Fix. When adding a formula column, it was necessary for the query to have been run, as the validation of the formula requires that the results have been loaded to locate any field referenced in the expression. Details of the fields were only passed to the results on running the query, so validation of formulae prior to that could fail. This has been fixed.

Alternate Compression Delimiter. Previously an asterisk was used in the compression algorithm. Now you can specify an alternate delimiter to avoid issues where there are asterisks in the data.
